Epidemiology

• The first case of HIV infection in the Philippines was reported in 1984.

• Since then, there have been 78,559 confirmed HIV cases reported to the HARP.
• Male- 73, 729 (94%)
• Female- 4, 819 (6%)

• At the time of diagnosis, more than half (51%, 39,803) were 25-34 years old
• while 22,585 (29%) were youth 15-24 years old

• The median age was 28 years old.

• Seventy-one percent (56,105) of the total diagnosed cases in the Philippines were reported from
January 2015 to June 2020.

• From April to June 2020, there were 934 newly confirmed HIV-positive individuals
reported to the HIV/AIDS & ART Registry of the Philippines (HARP).

• Twenty-nine percent (268) had clinical manifestations of advanced HIV infections at the
time of testing
Epidemiology
• More than a third (37%, 349) were from the
National Capital Region (NCR).

• Region 4A (21%, 194),

• Region 3 (19%, 176)

• Region 12 (7%, 63)

• Region 11 (5%, 43)

• comprised the top five regions with the most


number of newly diagnosed cases for this
reporting period, together accounting for 89%
of the total cases
Clinical Manifestation
• Acute HIV Syndrome

• Occurs 3-6 weeks after primary infection alng with a burst of


plasma viremia

• Symptoms: fever, skin rash, pharyngitis, myalgia

• Most patients recover spontaneously from this syndrome


Asymptomatic Stage
Clinical Manifestation

• Median time: 10 years ( for untreated patients)

• Ongoing and progressive HIV disease with active virus replication

• More severe and life threatening complications of HIV infection occur in patients with CD4 T
cell counts <200/ uL

AIDS:

• HIV + CD4 T cell ceount < 200/ uL; or


• HIV + HIV associated diseases indicative of a severe defect in cell mediated immunity
