A video of an Old English reading of Beowulf, which can be used in the digital
exploration project as an example of what the language sounds like, and will
be paired with the doc set containing the Old English text set of Beowulf.
With these two sources together, an activity can be done where students
attempt to translate the text into Modern English without seeing the actual
translation. It will then serve as an example of how different Old English to
what we speak today.

This link is to an account written by the official office of the British Royal
Family about William the Conqueror, and it serves as a good biography for
the first king of the current dynasty, and the one historical figure that
contributed to the creation of current English. It is a good text, and likely one
of the best secondary sources even though it might be slightly biased. It will
work as giving a background to the William the Conqueror and the Norman
Invasions.

The source is an article, but the main use is the picture within the article of
the character Beowulf killing the monster Grendel. Within the digital
exploration a small activity can be done asking the students to analyze the
picture and the various pieces of symbolism within it, then after give an
explanation of the picture.

This source is an article describing the Norman invasions of the British aisles,
and is likely the most important source of the four within this set. The reason
for this is that the English language would not have become what it is today if
the set of events described within had not happened. Within the exploration
not much of an activity can be done for it besides reading, and the
information will be included at the ‘exit ticket’ portion at the end of the day
that this is done on.
