Which Amendment Applies?
In this case, the first amendment was
impeded on. These students were protesting
(peacefully and quietly) the vietnam war
while in school.
The Story
During the Vietnam War, students decided to wear black
armbands to school to protest the war. After being
removed from the school, the students came back
wearing black clothing instead and later filed a first
amendment lawsuit.
Key Issue
Whether or not students had the right of free
speech and other first amendment rights in
schools.

Which Amendment Applies?
In this case, the first amendment, more
specifically the freedom of religion, was
impeded on. Students were ruled that they
could no longer pray before their football
games.
The Story
In school policy, a student representative
would lead a school-wide prayer during
the beginning of football games. The
argument was whether or not the school
was favouring one religion over another.
Key Issue
Whether or not the school was favoring one
religion during a student-led prayer before
football games and if it was a violation of the
first amendment’s freedom of religion.
The Summary

In school policy, a student-lead and student initiated


school-wide prayer would occur before the start of
school football games. The question was whether or
not the may have school favored one religion over
another. The SCOTUS ruled that it was, in fact, a
violation of the first amendment’s freedom of
speech.
