We estimate the effect of a changing in nurse staffing ratio on mortality rate

Summary of Results
We are 95% confident that hiring 10 additional nurses at Kletzl Hills is associated with a decrease in
mortality rate between 0.011% to 0.61%. Estimated average is 0.31%.
Additionally, yearly bonus change between $55,000 to $3,070,000. Estimated average is $1,550,000.

Results – Validation and Robustness of results
We explored many other possibilities that proved statistically not significant.

• New regression is resembling the original regression

• Ran mortality rate against all patient demographics (black,
Hispanic, female, low education, unemployment). All these
proved not statistically significant.
• Ran regressions of high touch services (rehab, hospice, home
health) All these proved not statistically significant.
• Ran regressions with controlling Medicare. This also proved not
statistically significant.
• Ran regressions with controlling hospital age and length of stay.
This also proved not statistically significant.

Recommendations

10 Additional Nurses should be hired

• Decrease in mortality rate between 0.011% to 0.61%.

Estimated average is 0.31%.

• Yearly bonus change between $55,000 to $3,070,000.

Estimated average is $1,550,000.

• Considering Kletzl Hills hospital has 150 beds, and in a

typical year admits 5,000 patients, a 0.31% reduction in
mortality translates into approximately 16 fewer lives lost Contoso
across those 5,000 patients. Pharmaceuticals
