MASS AND WEIGHT

MASS- the amount of matter in an object.

It is measured by grams, kilograms as a standard unit of

measurement in metric system.
Pounds in English system.
• Weight is a measurement of how strongly gravity pulls on a
mass.
• Weight is completely dependent on the amount of gravity there
is.
• It the result of the force of gravity!!!
• Without gravity there is NO WEIGHT (the ultimate diet plan!!!)
QUESTION

• Supposed you have a sack of rice. Will its weight

be greater in General Santos City or on top of Mt.
Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines?
• Explain why?
• Weight is a force.

F= m x a (F is force, m is mass and a is acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s 2)

Acceleration is a change in velocity per unit of time.

A= V/ T (A is acceleration, V is velocity and T is time.)

Velocity is the change in speed and;

S= d/t where distance is directly proportional to speed.

Therefore, distance affects the force or weight of an object.
UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION EQUATION

•

- force of gravity
- mass of object 1
- mass of object 2
- distance separating the objects’ center.
COMPUTATION

1. Compute for the weight of

sack of rice.
6400 km
F= m x a
=(50 kg) (9.8m/s2)
=490 N
COMPUTATION

•
= [2
COMPUTATION

•
= [1.01]
=
= 9.7
COMPUTATION

•To  get the weight of the sack of rice at the Mt. Apo,

F= m x a
=50kg x 9. 7
= 485 N
QUESTION

• Will the amount of matter in a sack of rice change if you bring it

to the top of Mt. Apo? Will there be less, more or the same
amount of rice in the sack?

• Since mass is amount of matter, does mass change with distance

from the center of the earth?
• Since mass is the amount of matter, it will remain the
same even at different distance from the center of the
earth. Weight may differ but mass remains the same
unless you change the amount of matter.
