STATISTICAL INQUIRY

STATISTICAL INQUIRY
The statistical inquiry follows the scientific method in
logically analyzing and critically evaluating data to solve
a particular problem. This involves the following steps.
STEP 1: Define the problem.
STEP 2: Gather or collect relevant data.
STEP 3: Manage or organize the collected data.
STEP 4: Use text, tables, or graphs to present data.
STATISTICAL INQUIRY
STEP 5: Define the problem.

For the statistical inquiry and its examples kindly

refer to your Mathematics in the Modern World Book
on pp. 104 – 106.
EXAMPLE
The thesis topic that the college students agreed upon
was about the effect of specific breakfast plan to
preschool children’s performance in the exams.

Research study: The Effect of Breakfast to Preschooler’s

Academic Performance
EXAMPLE
They would like to know whether student’s
performance in the exam is related to their breakfast
intake. Presumably, this will establish the importance of
having full meal for breakfast.
STEP 1: DEFINE THE PROBLEM
How does a specific breakfast plan affect the pre-
schooler’s performance in the examination?
EXAMPLE
To find this out, the researchers gathered data that described
the student’s breakfast diet and their performance in the exam.
In selected pre-school, they gave a common achievement test
to randomly selected pupils that serve as the subjects of the
study. Likewise, the students were asked what they had for
breakfast.
STEP 2: GATHER OR COLLECT RELEVANT DATA
Subjects of the study: selected pre-school students
Variables: students’ performance in the exam and students’
breakfast plan
EXAMPLE
The data collected were organized by summarizing the
scores in the achievement test and classifying the meal they
had in the morning as little, full, heavy, or no breakfast at all.
STEP 3: MANAGE OR ORGANIZE THE DATA
Classify or group the students according to the type of
breakfast they had as (a) little, (b) full, (c) heavy, or (d) no
breakfast at all. Compute the average score in the exam per
group.
EXAMPLE
STEP 4: USE TEXT, TABLES, OR GRAPHS TO
PRESENT THE DATA
Construct tables that will show the distribution of the
students’ exam score. Draw graph to represent the data.
STEP 5: ANALYZE, VERIFY, AND TEST DATA USING
APPROPRIATE STATISTICAL TOOLS
Compare the exam scores of the students grouped according
to the breakfast plan by using an appropriate test plan.
