“ To be able to recognize mathematical

reasoning...“

In this bonus activity, create a video essay

(screencast style with voice) that answers the
following guide questions:
DUE: Feb 27 (EK), Feb 28 (EQ)
1.In your own words,
what is a mathematical problem?
Mathematical problems, in my opinion, are problems which
involve the use of numbers, letters and symbols as variables and
constants, operations, and equalities or inequalities. These
problems are solved arithmetically, algebraically, or solved by
other branches of mathematics such as differential and integral
calculus to reach a desired outcome or a solution to the problem.
2. In your own way,
How do you solve a mathematical problem?
I solve mathematical problems by first analyzing the situation,
then applying a set of specific patterns or formulas which I’ve
learned from different references to solve the problem. These
references involve things such as text books, visual aids, video
tutorials and most especially through my teachers.

3. In your own words,
what is mathematical thinking or reasoning?
Why is it important in engineering?
Mathematical thinking or reasoning for me is about observing the
world in a mathematical perspective. It is about using your prior
mathematical knowledge for solving problems. In Engineering,
Physics is a necessity since it transforms worldly phenomena into
mathematical models. Formulas are then made to explain the
concepts of the said phenomena which then contributed to the
progress of technology we have today.
4. In your own journey,
How did you acquire
mathematical reasoning skills?
Throughout my whole education, I’ve learned mathematical
reasoning skills through math classes such as Arithemetic,
Algebra, Geoemetry, Trigonometry, Statistics, and
Calculus. I vividly remember being forced to memorize the
multiplication table but it actually really helped me in
having good grades in math during grade school.
5. Cite a specific example from your experience that relates
to your answers to questions 1 to 4.

Elaborate that experience within the context of your

fundamental knowledge in Logic and Mathematical Proofs.
I’ll use my experience in solving a Rubik’s cube and compare it with my journey
through mathematics. To solve a Rubik’s cube, you must know a number of
specific sets of algorithms to move a certain color in the right position. In
relation, I can only solve mathematical problems which I have previous
knowledge of or clearly remember the ways how to solve it if I had that previous
knowledge. For example, I cannot solve a trigonometric problem if I forgot it’s
basic fundamentals or never knew of it at that time. I also cannot solve it
properly if I haven’t mastered or practiced it. And the same goes with my
knowledge in logic and mathematical proofs. With my lack of mastery and
knowledge of logic or mathematical proofs and previous math fundamentals, I
found the subject difficult as time flew by fast.
