PRESENT SIMPLE
O The present simple describes general
actions, events and states:
I get up early.
It rains a lot of in Oregon.
They like pop music.
O The present simple describe routines
and habits.
O I take a shower every day.
Present simple:
Basic Structure
O The structure of Present Simple is: Subject
+main verb+complement
(noun/adjective/preposition).
O Example
I write poems.
S + main verb + complement (noun)
She is outgoing.
S + verb to be + complement (adjective)
Present simple has two forms:
O the infinitive form (have, go,want) and the – s or
es form (has, goes, wants).
O Use the – s or es form in affirmative sentences
with he/she/it. (Third Person in Singular)
Examples: He has a new cell phone. She goes
to tae kwon do class once a week. The dog (it)
wants a bone.
Spelling: Third person singular
Verbs ending in ch, s, sh, x = + es
box-----boxes miss ---------misses
finish------finishes watch-------watches
Verbs ending in y preceded by a consonant: change
the y to i + es
study ----- studies

Verbs ending in y preceded by a vowel: just add s


play ----- plays

do, go + es:
do-----does
O Use the infinitive form in all other cases. To
make questions and negative with he/she/it,
use does or doesn’t and the infinitive form.
O examples.:
She doesn’t cook the lunch.
He doesn’t write poems.
Does she cook the lunch?
Does he write poems?
Present Simple :to be
O We use to be to give personal informacion, like,
name, age, origin and occupation.
-Maria is from Spain. She is very intelligent.
-My name is Jimmy.
-I am sixteen.
-He is a teacher.
O With the verb to be you don’t have to use the
auxiliary verbs (do/does) when you change to
negative or interrogative forms. Examples
-I’m not sixteen (negative)
-Is he a teacher? (interrogative)
