• Continuity theory
Human language is an evolvement from a more primitive animal
s which means it continually grow and develop.
• Discontinuity theory
Human language may be something quite different from our basi
c animal heritage.
CONTINUITY THEORY

• Humans started out with a simple cry which could

means "I'm hungry", "Please hear me out". Then i
t developed into a language.
DISCONTINUITY THEORY

• Various types of crying which monkeys use to communicate wit

h each other are still far from human language, it's partly a sym
bol.
• Yelps of pain, shrieks of fear, and different types of crying obser
ved in babies may be closely related with the call system of mon
keys.
A COMPARISON OF HUMAN LANGUAGE AND ANIMAL
COMMUNICATION

• 'Design features' which characterize language:

• Interchangeability: adult members of any speech of community a
re interchangeably transmitters and receivers of linguistic signal
s.
• Complete feedback: the transmitter of a linguistic signal himself
receives the message.
LANGUAGE FEATURES

• Vocal-auditory channel: The ability to produce sound from vocal organs and he
aring mechanism receives them. Can be done even in the dark, doesn't require
lot of energy, can be done while doing other activity.
• Arbitrariness: Human language use neutral symbols. No connector between the
word described and the thing it refers to.
• Onomatopoeic: A connection between the message they are sending and the si
gnal they use to convey.
• Semanticity: The use of symbols to refer to objects and actions. Applied to actio
n as well as objects.
• Spontaneous usage: human initiates speech freely.
• Turn taking: taking turn when speaking
