How can we estimate the value of π using
simple Monte Carlo methods?
The total area of the square with side L is:

The total area of the circle within the square is:

The area relationship then is

Of the main activities within Materials Engineering using the Monte Carlo method, the following stand out: the
simulation of the behavior of different particles in different environments, the behavior of materials exposed to
physicochemical treatments, the construction of materials with geometric or spherical characteristics, among some
others.

Conclusions
• The wide variety of Monte Carlo methods, and the ability to configure
the model, allow simulations of a large number of materials.
• Most of the simulations performed with the Monte Carlo method are
based on Markov Chains, and in turn are derived from the Metropolis
Algorithm.
• The variety of the methods is due to the fact that existing algorithms
are adjusted to be able to simulate different or more specific
physicochemical phenomena.
• The randomness of the models does not allow the reproduction of
exact results, but does allow the obtaining of comparable results.
