Compound Nouns
Compound Nouns
A compound noun is made up of two (or more) nouns, or an adjective and a noun:
(n+n) ALARM CLOCK (a+n) BLACK BOARD
The two words have different meanings separately, but together they have a new meaning.
Compound nouns are sometimes written as two words: CREDIT CARD
Other times as one word: SUNGLASSES
Occasionally they are joined by a hyphen: BABY-SITTER
There is no rule for this, so may need to check in a dictionary
