trust between a leader and his followers. KEY LEARNING POINT :
Doing community work is not easy. It is tiring,
stressful and sometimes you will encounter many problems. But what is important is for the group members to exercise patience, trust and teamwork. What is Synergy ? It is the key to optimal performance. Its success depends on the combination of natural providential events. The Story of the Geese The geese travel in V formation which is their natural way of flying . They do not force themselves for this to happen. The lead goose creates a turbulence that assists the geese behind him, the last goose creates less effort. When the lead goose get exhausted , somebody assumes the position . Nobody assumes monopoly of the leadership. They fly non stop because of this synergy. SYNERGY EQUATION : Synthesis + Energy = the interaction of two or more agents or forces so that the combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects. CHARACTERISTICS OF A SYNERGIZED GROUP 1. Team Players Listen Every member is interested to listen . A community is born when there is a welcoming of experience. 2. Team Players Speak Up Every member is special in his/her own way. CHARACTERISTICS OF A SYNERGIZED GROUP 3. Team Players Agree to Agree They reach a solution . Both sides are happy by synergizing. In a win-win solution , there are winners and losers just like a competition. 4. Team Players are Flexible Flexibility minimizes disappointments . The members accept multiple solutions to a problem. CHARACTERISTICS OF A SYNERGIZED GROUP
5. Team Players are Compassionate
We accept people on who they are. Every member needs to give support in a constructive manner which heightens sympathy and empathy. Unnecessary misunderstanding is avoided. When we try to live life when the aim is to achieve synergy, we realize that we can do so much with less effort and with little time and energy. TWO LEVELS OF INDIVIDUAL SYNERGY 1. Individual Synergy Lights, Camera, Action . Interior for individual synergy . • It is what makes up a synergized individual. • Success or failure of a certain team ( family, school ) depends so much on its players’ attitudes, motivations that makes a team work or not work. • There is not much unity in the families today because of a lot of individual distractions that pulls him away from the team- fears, money, wants, desires . What do you want really ? TWO LEVELS OF INDIVIDUAL SYNERGY 2. Group Synergy People in their final moment when they stand on the edge of eternity , never said “bring me my diploma, show me my medals , etc. “ Rather , they long for the people whom they love . It is not so much our properties and possessions , but relationships matter most. We want to relate to others. Genuine synergy happens when there is a genuine desire to touch other peoples’ lives. TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP Society’s transformation requires transformational leadership. Stephen Covey explains that the goal of transformational leadership is to “ transform people and organizations in a literal sense – to change them in mind and heart; enlarge vision , insight and understanding ; clarify purposes ; make behavior congruent with beliefs , principles on values, and bring about changes that are permanent , self perpetuating and momentum building. LEADERSHIP Leadership is the ability to influence others towards desired goals. It also means “ doing the right things .” How can leaders increasingly gain a servant’s heart ? Leadership is about serving others, not Jesus Christ is a true servant leader wielding power . . A leader… 1. Denies himself – we are to please others, not ourselves. 2. Develop others – we are to add value to others 3. Accepts mistreatment – we are to forgive wrong 4. Imitates Christ – we are to look at Jesus as our model. 5. Is a student – we are to remain teachable 6. Pursues the harmony of relationships- we are to pursue unity and peace. LEADERSHIP EQUATION : Our Preparation + God’s Providence = SUCCESS Activity : Work or Real Value Let students do a mental exercise that is an effective tool in helping a person identify his dreams. Ask the participants to close their eyes for a few minutes and let them imagine that if they had anything they wanted ( unlimited money, unlimited time, information , all the resources they could ask for . What would they do with it? The answer to the question is their dream . Acting on this dream adds significance to life. Let the students fill in the blanks : If I had _______________________________________________ I would _______________________________________________ LEADERSHIP BEGINS IN THE HEART What can a person do to manage and cultivate good relationships as a leader ? It requires three things : 1. Understand people Marketing expert Rod Nichols said , “ if you deal with the same client in the same way, you will only close twenty five to thirty percent of your contacts, because you will only close one personality type. But if you learn how to effectively work with all four personality types, you can conceivably close one hundred percent of your contacts. 2. Love People Businessman Henry Gruland said , “ Being a leader is more than just wanting to lead . Leaders have empathy for others and a keen ability to find the best in people… not the worst… by truly caring for others . You cannot be a truly effective leader unless you love people. 3. Help People If your focus is on what you can put into people rather than what you can get out of them, they’ll love and respect you and those attributes are great foundations for building relationships.
