Paper Chromatography

What Is Paper Chromatography? And applications .

 Paper chromatography is an method used to

separate colored chemicals or substances.
 All forms of chromatography work on the same principle.
 They all have a stationary phase (a solid, or a liquid
supported on a solid) and a mobile phase (a liquid or
a gas).
 In paper chromatography, the stationary phase is a
very uniform absorbent paper. The mobile phase is a
suitable liquid solvent or mixture of solvents.
 Obtaining Pure Compounds: This is done by cutting out and redissolving
the patterns formed by each constituent.
Qualitative Analysis:  To analyze the different
compounds in drugs.
Pathology and Forensic Science: is useful in the
field of forensic science, for investigation of crime
How to use the chromatography
technique

•Thus this technique is used for separating the mixture of the dyes from a
particular color.
•Take a transparent glass (eg: testube, container) and pour a small amount
of water or any solvent.
•Then put the chromatography paper in it having a spot of any
color.
•Slowly the dyes will move up with the water.
•Observe it for some time and you will see the different types of
dyes.
•After the process the dyes in the ink mixture will be separated.
•The paper with the different colored spots is called
chromatogram.
