ESTIMATING RESOURCE
REQUIREMENTS ,TIME AND COST
Estimating Resources
• After the project work down is broken down to
activities/work packages the next step will be to estimate
the
– materials
– equipments
– man power /labor/ required for each work package.
• Usually these resources shall be converted to monetary
units to determine the cost of the activity or work package
• The material estimates can be determined from the
design documents /drawings and specifications/
Estimating Resources
• Once the amount of the work is determined the input
material requirement can be established from conversion
table
• The equipment requirements require the judgment of the
engineer given the scale of the works.
– However if equipments are deemed necessary then their work
rates and operation costs can be read from standard references
• The manpower requirements depend on the method of
construction and the productivity of local skill.
– The productivity of equipment and manpower can also be used
to estimate the time required to accomplish the work.
Estimating Resources
• Who should do the estimation?
– Usually the time, resource and equipment
estimates should be done by the people who will
do the work or people have done similar work in
the same area
– If you cannot estimate any of the resources for the
work package, break it down to smaller work
packages which can be estimated. And revise your
WBS
Exercise
• Try to calculate the work volume and material quantities required for the
construction of 30m3 sandwich concrete reservoir given below
– Excavation volume
– Hard core
– Lean concrete
– Base slab
– Walls
– Roof slab
– Reinforcement
– Amount of Stone for Masonry and hard core works
– Amount of cement, sand and aggregate required including plastering and
pointing works
– Amount of form work required
– Water stops and other detail materials including inlet and outlet and flush pipes
