PROBLEM STATEMENT
1. How to develop a mathematic formula using
existing formula and to work as 1 system.
INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE
REVIEW
1. The purpose of  Focus on close
marine diesel engine cooling system.
cooling system  Focus on shell tube

2. Types of cooling heat exchanger

system

cooling system
4. Heat exchanger in
detail
PURPOSE OF COOLING SYSTEM

1. To cool the engines continuously and to

ensure the temperature of the engine is
at optimum level within the range of
highest operating efficiency.

2. Reduce the risk of changes on material

properties and thermal stress.
TYPES OF COOLING SYSTEM
1. Open cooling system
• Liquid used to carry heat away from the engine
is drawn from raw water.

2. Close cooling system

• Liquid used to carry heat away from the engine
is circulating in the close loop
• Using either heat exchanger, keel cooler or
radiator and fan.
COMPONENTS OF COOLING SYSTEM
based on close cooling system

1. Jacket cooling water system

• Space filled of liquid surrounding an engine
compartment in purpose to transfer the heat
from the engine to the fluid.
2. Lubricating oil cooling water system
• Cooling the lubricating oil
3. Piston cooling water system
• Cooling the piston cap

4. Fuel valve cooling water system

• Cooling the fuel valve or injector

COMPONENTS OF COOLING SYSTEM

5. Heat exchanger
• remove heat from the jacket water and the
lubricating oil to the raw water pumped from
outside the vessel.
• Types of heat exchanger
1. Shell and tubes
2. Plate tube
3. Strut tube

9. Temperature regulator
HEAT EXCHANGER IN DETAIL
Consider on shell and tube heat exchanger
• Handle variety of services in allowable pressures
and temperature.
• Pressure : from vacuum to 41.5 Mpa
• Temperature : from cryogenic to 1100˚C
Majority use for liquid to liquid heat exchanger
Flow configuration:
• Single pass, multipass
• Parallel flow, counter flow, cross flow and mixed
or unmixed flow
2-pass tube

Performance of heat flow flow
exchanger
 Depends on
temperature
distribution
 Depends on fluid flow
configuration
 Depends on
composition of fluid

Next procedures

 Continue study on mathematical formula

using in designing the heat exchanger.

 Analyze the data of the ship

 Develop mathematical model to get the

suitable and efficient heat exchanger by
calculate the heat exchanger effectiveness.
Mathematical formula involve:
 Heat transfer

Q=UA(∆T)

 Log mean temperature difference

 Heat exchanger effectiveness

 Correction factor for complex heat exchanger
involve multiple pass or mixed or unmixed
crossflow

∆TLMTD = F (∆T for counterflow) where F=f(Z,P)

Correction factor can be get from table
published from ASME based on Kreith
