calculation of the response of a building (or non building)
structure to earthquakes
• Methods
– Equivalent static
– Response spectrum
– Linear dynamic
– Non linear dynamic
– Non linear static

3
Contd..
• The performance of RCC structures will be nonlinear under
seismic loads, this behavior will be defined by the formation
of plastic hinges and loss of considerable stiffness
• Pushover analysis is an incremental static analysis

SUMMARY
• The seismic behavior of multi-storied building frame during an
earthquake motion depends upon the distribution of strength, mass
and stiffness in both horizontal and vertical planes.
• All models are analyzed by using design and analysis software
ETABS or SAP and designed as per IS 456:2000 and IS 1893:2002.
• Push over analysis is a non linear static analysis had been used to
obtain the inelastic deformation capability of frame.

16
OBJECTIVES
The objective of the present study is
• To model a G+4 RCC building in ETABS
• To carry out push over analysis in ETABS to determine the
capacity, performance point

17
METHODOLOGY
• Studying the literature reviews for understanding the concept
• Identifying the building plan and material properties.
• Modelling the plan in ETABS.
• Analysis of the building using non linear static pushover by
ETABS software.
• Observation of results and discussions.

18
SCOPE OF STUDY
• To familiarize with the designing and analysis software
ETABS
• Validate and check the possibility of implementing ETABS
software.

BUILDING DETAILS
• The building is a 5 storied structure for commercial purpose.
• It also consist of a stair cum machine room and a lift.
• The building as a whole, covers an area of 567 m2.
• The typical floor area is 113.4 m2.

22
MODELLING IN ETABS
• Step 1- Story and grid data
• Step 2 – Defining and assigning beams
• Step 3 – Defining and assigning columns
• Step 4 – Defining and assigning slabs

• Step 5 – Defining shear wall

LOAD CALCULATIONS
Seismic base shear
Seismic load
• VB = Ah x W
• Total D.L = 3434.1 KN
• Ah = (ZI/2R) (Sa/ g)
• Total L.L = 78.975 kN/m2
(25% of L.L ) – Z = 0.16 (zone III)
• Weight of floors 1,2,3 and 4 – I=1
is 5300KN – R = 3(OMRF)
• Weight of 5th floor = 5030 kN – Tx =0.38 s, Ty =0.36 s
• Total seismic load = W=5300 – Sa/g =2.5
x 4 + 5030 =26230 kN Ah = 0.067
VB = 0.067x26230= 1575kN

25
PUSHOVER IN ETABS
• Step 1 – Define load patterns
• Step 2 - Define load cases
– Push X
– Push Y

• Step 3 – Assign auto plastic hinge to beams

• Step 4 – Assign auto plastic hinge to columns
• Step 5 – Run analysis

26
PUSHOVER ANALYSIS RESULTS

• The figure shows the Pushover curve base shear vs lateral

displacement.

Fig : Push over curve

27
Contd..
• The Pushover Curve shows that the building has objectively
high Base Shear Capacity than the Design Base Shear.

• The Design base shear (VB) was found to be 1575 kN and the
capacity is 7637 kN which is much higher, hence the building
is safe for this level of earthquake.

30
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Performance Point:
• The push over curve is also called as capacity curve which is a
plot of base shear v/s displacement
• The response spectrum is the plot between spectral
acceleration and the time period.
• The Performance point is the intersection of the demand and
capacity curves.
• At performance point, the effective time period is found to be
0.334 sec.
31
Contd..
• Spectral acceleration v/s time period

Fig : Spectral acceleration v/s time period

32
Contd..
• Maximum base force is found to be 9847.23 kN at step 8 of
push X and minimum is found to be zero

33
CONCLUSION
• Considering this project, it was concluded that, if the buildings
are designed with proper sections and reinforcement details as
per standard codes, it will perform better under seismic forces.
• Hinges developed from the lower floors, indicating that the
lower floor columns shall have more reinforcement area than
upper floor columns.
• The performance of the pushover analysis mostly depends on
the material used in the structure.
