• The Street Lawyer  is a legal
thriller novel by John Grisham.
It was Grisham's ninth novel.
The book was released in the
United States on 1 January
1998, published by Bantam
Books, and on 30 March 1998
in the UK, published by
Century.
The novel starts with a homeless man, identifying himself only as ''Mister'',
who enters the powerful law firm Drake & Sweeney in  Washington DC
and takes hostages a bunch of lawyers and keeps angrily asking about some
eviction that took place. He eventually gets killed after 6 hours, but one of
the lawyers named Michael Brock feels the need to do further investigation
on this man. Michael Brock is a man in his thirties who had worked for
Drake & Sweeney for a long time, but all of a sudden his interests take a
different turn. After meeting Mordecai Green, an advocate of the homeless,
he starts doubing his job and becomes more and more interested in helping
the poor.
Our opinion on the book is a good one. We were impressed by the
evolution of the main character. He gets tired of chasing money and
wants to help the poor. Even though the money he would get out of his
new job was way less than before, he doesn't care, his only interest is
helping homeless people. Our favorite character of this novel was
definitely Mordecai Green. He is a very powerful man with such a good
heart. In the scene where he explains the whole story of the dead
mother and her kids, he made everybody there cry, which gives him a
strong personality. He doesn't care at all about police and is
determined to bring justice into the case of the black woman.
Our ranking of the novel would be 8 out of 10. We
enjoyed the story but we wanted more backstory of
other characters, for example Megan, Michael's love
interest, or Mordecai. But overall, the novel is pretty
good and we would recommend it.
