Performance of SME’s
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are considered to
be the backbone of the European Union’s (EU) economy
(European Commission, 2016a), while the
entrepreneurship is seen as ‘an engine of economic
growth’ (Audretsch, 2009).
KEY TAKEAWAYS
•Small and mid-size enterprises (SMEs) are businesses that maintain
revenues, assets or a number of employees below a certain threshold.
•Each country has its own definition of what constitutes a small and
medium-sized enterprise (SME).
•Small and mid-size enterprises (SMEs) play an important role in the
economy, employing vast numbers of people and helping to shape
innovation.
•Governments regularly offer incentives, including favorable tax
treatment and better access to loans, to help keep them in business.
Importance of SME’s

The SME sector is a major
engine which encourages the
growth of jobs and wealth
creation in the country's
economic
system. SMEs performance
act as a significant part that
is linked to the strengthening
and enhancement of the
development of the country.
