Thermonuclear Reactor

WHY THERMONUCLEAR
REACTOR
It is because the energy
producing nuclear fusion
reaction is started by the
extremely high temperatures
of a nuclear fission bomb
Thermonuclear Reactor
 also called as the fusion
reactor or fusion power plant
a device to produce
electrical power from the
energy released in a
nuclear fusion reaction.
Thermonuclear Reactor
A great deal of effort is under way
develop a sustained and
controllable fusion power reactor.
Controlled fusion is often called the
ultimate energy source because of
the availability of water, its fuel
source.
The fusion reactions that appear
most promising in the
construction of a fusion power
reactor involve deuterium (0)
and tritium (T), which are
isotopes of hydrogen.
The fundamental challenge of
nuclear fusion power is to give
the nuclei enough kinetic energy
to overcome the repulsive
Coulomb force between them at
close proximity.
Critical Factors in Thermonuclear Reactor

high temperature
 plasma ion density
 plasma confinement
time
Density and Confinement time
The density and
confinement time must both
be large enough to ensure
that more fusion energy will
be released than is required to
heat the plasma.
Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory
 project to control
thermo nuclear reactions
 original name was
Project Matterhorn
Advantages of Thermonuclear
Reactor

Barely any waste

 Simple to control
 Low cost power
 No Green House Gases
Disadvantages of Thermonuclear Reactor
Energy input and energy
output
Expensive Construction Cost
Little Understood
No materials for the job
