Appositives

What is an appositive?

 It is a noun or a pronoun.
 It is placed after another noun to identify it.
 It gives an extra information and detail.
 It can begin with the articles “a, an, or the”
 It will NEVER begin with a relative pronoun.
 It is NOT a subject of the sentence.
Examples:

 Our friend Martha becomes a teacher.

 Mybrother, a mechanical engineer, is very


multitalented.

 The award went to Suneo, the most polite student in


his class.
Types of the Appositive:

Restrictive appositive Non-restrictive appostive


 No need comma,  Need comma,
 It’s
needed to make the  The additional information is not
very important or essential,
meaning of the sentence
complete.  If it is omitted, it can be
understood.
Example of Restrictive appositive

 One of the best selling cars in Indonesia


 One of the best selling cars in (subject of the sentence)
Indonesia Toyota Avanza is  Toyota Avanza (appositive)
produced by the Daihatsu
manufacturer.  is produced by the Daihatsu
manufacturer (Predicate and Object)
Example of Non restrictive

 Toyota Avanza, one of the best  Toyota Avanza is the Subject.


selling cars in Indonesia, is  One of the best selling cars in Indonesia
produced by the Daihatsu is the appositive.
manufacturer.  is produced by the Daihatsu
manufacturer are the predicate and object.
Other examples

1. Bruce Lee, _____________, died at the age of 32.


2. Mr Soekarno, _______________, was born in
Surabaya.
3. My cousin ________ becomes a professional football
player.
4. Joker, _______________, won many awards in Oscar.
The position of nonrestrictive appositive can be reversed:

 My brother, a mechanical engineer, is very multitalented.


 A mecahnical engineer, my brother is very multitalented.
 _________________, Bruce Lee died at the age of 32.
 __________________, Mr Soekarno was born in Surabaya.
Analyse these sentences whether they have appositives or
adjective clauses!
