Chemical Properties of an Atom
• If the outmost subshell is full, the element is stable.
• If the outmost subshell is full and the gap to the next
available energy level is large, the element is the most
stable.
• If the outmost subshell is more than a half full, the
atom intends to attract more electrons to become a
closed shell. This element is nonmetallic.
• If the outmost subshell is less than a half full, the
atom intends to drop the outmost subshell electrons.
This element is metallic.
