The Rule of law and Combating Corruption
Definition of Corruption: -
 It is morally wrong and one of the ways of
breaking rule of law. It refers to making
oneself the owner of an unjust benefit and
favors at the expense of others.
Type of corruption
• Abuse of power: - wrong and excessive use of
one’s power to benefits one self.
• Bribe/Bribery/ - a gift usually given in the
form of money.
• Nepotism /favoritisms/:- showing of
favoritism towards relatives and friends, based up
on those r/ships rather than on an objective
evaluation of ability or suitability.
• Theft: - stealing something from a person or
place.
• Embezzlement:- to steal money that you are
responsible for or that belongs to your employer. It
is committed by producing false receipt or
approvals.
Some Cause of Corruption
 Absence of rule of law
 Lack of exemplary ethical leadership in most

countries
Impact of Corruption on Social and Economic
development in a Given Country.

 It creates inequality among citizen.


 It causes lack of faith and disregard for the

law.
 It affects economic growth and reduces the

social services citizens receive from gov’t.


 Set back the development of the country.
Mechanism of Combating Corruption

 Create good governance


 Create strong civil society
 Society ready to combat corruption in every

way possible
 Individuals must be honest and truth full in

their day-to- day activities


 Officials decide to fight corruption by every
legal means.
 Expose corrupt people and turn away from

corrupt practice.
