 What is sustainability?
 Need for sustainability

 Renewable energy

 Advantages and disadvantages

 Conclusions
SUSTAINABILITY
 Development and innovation to meet the needs of today
without compromising on the needs of tomorrow.
 It contains two concepts:

(1) Concept of needs

(2) Idea of limitations
NEED FOR SUSTAINABILITY
 To conserve , protect , restore and improve the supply
and quantity of natural resources and environmental
media over long term.
 To prevent pollution , reduce waste and create a
sustainable future.
ENERY PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION
RENEWABLE ENERGY
 Renewable energy, often referred to as clean energy,
comes from natural sources or processes that are
constantly replenished.
DIFFERENT SOURCES OF RENEWABLE
ENERGY
 Solar energy: Solar cells are capable of converting
enough of sun’s energy into power to run everyday
electrical equipment
PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH SOLAR
ENERGY
 High cost of energy storage
 Requires lots of space
WIND ENERGY
 Wind energy turns a turbine’s blades, which feeds an
electric generator and produces electricity
BIOMASS ENERGY
 Energy developed from organic materials like plants,
woods, animals and crop residues.
 (1) Burning biomass

 (2) Extracting methane gas from biomass

 (3) Producing biofuels

BIOFUELS
 Derived from vegetable oils and animal fats.
 These fuels have good energy densities and can be used
as heating oils to power cars and buses.
ADVANTAGES

 Renewables are easy and flexible to manage

 Generate job opportunities

 Their benefits can be widely shared

 Reduce the differences between rich and poor

 They lead to better health and sanitation

 Environment friendly
DISADVANTAGES
 Low efficiency
 Difficult to transport energy

 Geographic limitations
CONCLUSIONS

 Find more efficient ways for energy conversion from

renewables.
 Encourage innovation and incentives.

 Invest in technologies that harness energy.

 Creating awareness about climate change and renewable

energy utilisation for sustainable development.
