General Shop Safety


OSHA and EPA
• Occupational Safety and Health Act – passed
into legislation in 1970
– Ensures safe and healthful working conditions
– Monitors, controls, and educates workers
regarding health and safety in the workplace
• Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
– Regulates air and water quality standards,
including vehicle emissions standards

• Always wear safety glasses.
• Avoid wearing loose clothing and jewelry.

• Properly prepare the vehicle for servicing.
• Properly exhaust running vehicles.
• Avoid moving parts.
• Do not smoke in the shop.

• Clean up spills immediately.
• Keep the floor clean.
• Properly store oily rags and combustibles.
• Keep tools in good condition.
• Use the proper tool for the job.
• There should not be horseplay in the shop.
• Know where all safety equipment is located.
• Use proper footwear.
Smoking, Alcohol, and
Drugs
• Smoke in designated areas only.
• Do not use prescription drugs that cause
drowsiness or sleepiness.
• Do not work under the influence of any
drugs or alcohol while working in the shop.

– Class A: used for paper, wood, clothing, and
textiles
– Class B: used for flammable liquids such as
gasoline, oil, paint, and grease
– Class C: used for electrical fires
– Class D: used for metal and chemical fires
