CONVERSION of UNITS

•At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
1.Perform accurate measurements and calculation based
on a given task.
2.Convert one system of measurements to another.
3.Understand the importance of converting units.
UNITS OF MEASUREMENT

•STANDARD UNITS (SI UNITS)

•The International System of Units (abbreviated SI) is
the metric system used in science, industry, and
medicine.
KEY POINTS:
1.Every field of science involves taking measurements,
understanding them, and communicating them to others. In
other words, we all have to speak the same basic language.
2.The SI system, also called the metric system, is used around
the world.
What are the seven basic units in the SI System?

Units (symbol) Physical Quantities

Meter (m) length
Kilogram (kg) mass
Ampere (A) Current
Mole (mol) Amount of substance
Kelvin (K) Temperature
Second (s) Time
Candela (cd) Luminous Intensity
What is the importance of studying these units?

• Every field of science involves taking measurements,

understanding them, and communicating them to others. In
other words, we all have to speak the same basic language.
These units are used to communicate with other people most
especially in the field of science and technology.
CONVERSION FACTOR:
• A conversion factor is a ratio (or fraction) which
represents the relationship between two different
units. A conversion factor is ALWAYS equal to
1. Here are some examples of conversion
factors: All these conversion factors are equal
to 1.

• SOME CONVERSION FORMULAS:

EXAMPLE #1
••  14
inches to ft
SOLUTION:

14 in x = 1.17 ft
Example #2
•  5 yards to inches

5 yards x x

= 180 in
EXAMPLE #3

24 miles to cm

Clue: 1 mile = 5280 feet

SOLUTION:

1mile= 5280 feet

1 foot= 12 inches
1 inch =2.54 cm

Answer= 3 862 425.6 cm
Example #4
••  Calculate
the volume of the sphere with radius 4 m.
Convert your answer in yards.

Volume of the sphere =

Solution:
•  Convert 4 meters to yards.

4 m x xxx
4.374453193 yards
V sphere= = 4 =80.16 yd
