Meningitis is a bacterial or viral infection of
the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal
cord and causes swelling. In simple words, it is
an inflammation of the meanings. Meanings
are the three membranes that wrap the brain
and spinal cord. The common causes of
Meningitis are Bacterial and Viral infections.
Others include Cancer, drug allergies,
chemical irritation etc. Viral and Bacterial
Meningitis are contagious in nature and can be
transmitted through coughing or sneezing.
There are 3 types of Meningitis Viral, Bacterial
and Fungal. Viral Meningitis is the most
common one and Bacterial Meningitis is
considered to be the most dangerous. 

In this blog, we will discuss all effect, causes

and symptoms of all the three types of
Meningitis.
 Viral Meningitis
It is the most common type of
Meningitis among all three. It is
usually less hazardous as
compared to Bacterial
Meningitis. A patient sometimes
gets better without any medical
assistance. However, for
individuals with a weaker
immune system this type of
Meningitis can have serious
repercussions.

Causes and Transmission

The common causes of Viral

Meningitis are viruses like
Non-polio enter viruses,
Mumps virus, measles virus
etc. It can be transmitted
through contact with an
infected person. However,
only a few people get
infected through contact.

Symptoms
Common symptoms of Viral Meningitis are
Fever, Headache, Stiff neck, Nausea, Vomiting
etc. It also affects babies and the common
symptoms are Fever, poor eating, irritability etc.
Treatment
Mostly, there is no specific treatment
for this type of Meningitis. Usually,
patients recover completely in 7-10
days. You can take antiviral drugs if
you catch influenza.

Prevention
To prevent the transmission of Viral Meningitis do the following:

Clean frequently touched surfaces

Bacterial Meningitis
It is the most deadly type of Meningitis among all three. Usually, patients recover
from Meningitis but permanent disabilities can happen from the infection.
Causes and Transmission
Causes of this type of Meningitis vary
in different age groups. N.
meningitides, S. pneumoniae causes
Meningitis in teens and adults and
Group B Streptococcus, S. pneumoniae,
L. monocytogenes, E. coli in Babies and
Infants. In infants, the mother can
transmit the bacteria and in adults, it
can be transmitter throat secretion of
saliva.
Symptoms
The symptoms just like causes vary in different age
groups. In young babies, doctors look for a soft spot on
the head. In adults Fever, Nausea, vomiting, homophobia
etc. Later symptoms are seizures and coma.
Treatment
There are several antibiotics that doctors use to
cure Bacterial meningitis. Some of them are
cephalosporins, Claforan (cefotaxime) and
Rocephin (ceftriaxone).
Prevention
To prevent bacteria from transmitting vaccines
are the best option available. The three types of
Vaccines are Meningococcal vaccines,
Pneumococcal vaccines and Hib vaccines.
 Fungal Meningitis
It is the rarest type of Meningitis
among all three. It is caused by a
fungus and spread to the brain and
spinal cord. 

Causes and transmission

Usually, Fungal Meningitis is caused by fungi
like Cryptococcus, Histoplasma,
Blastomyces, Coccidioides, and Candida.
These fungi are transmitted if a person
breathes in fungus spores. And a person will
get Fungal Meningitis if the infection spreads
from lungs to the nervous system. However,
it cannot transmit from person to person.

Symptoms
Normally people with Fungal Meningitis
display signs like Fever, stiff neck, nausea,
confusion etc.
Treatment
