LINE SUPPORTS

In general the line supports used for transmission an

Distribution of electric power are of various types;

o WOODEN POLES
o STEEL POLES
o R.C.C. POLES
o STEEL TOWERS
WOODEN POLES:-

 Made of seasoned wood(sal or chir).

 Cheap,easily available,provide insulating Properties.
 Comparatively smaller life(20-25 years).
 Less mechanical strength.
 Require periodical inspection.
 Cannot be used for higher voltages.

STEEL POLES
The steel poles are often used as a substitute for
Wooden poles
 Greater mechanical strength.
 Longer life.
 Permit longer spans to be used.
 Used for distribution purpose.
 Need to be galvanised or painted in order to prolong Its
life.
The steel poles are three types:
1)rail poles
2)tubular poles 3)rolled
steel poles
RCC POLES
 The reinforced concrete poles have become very
popular As line supports in recent years.
 Greater mechanical strength.
 Longer life.
 Permit longer span than steel towers.
 Required little maintanance.
 Good insulating properties.
 RCC poles for single & double circuit.

STEEL TOWERS
 In practice, wooden, steel and reinforced concrete pole
are used for distribution purposes at low voltages
upto 11kv.
 However, for long distance transmission at higher
voltage Steel towers are invariably employed.
 Grater mechanical strength.
 Longer life.
 Can withstand most severe climatic conditions.
 Permit the use of longer spans.
