Cold War, the open yet restricted rivalry that The Truman Doctrine was an American foreign
developed after World War II between the policy whose stated purpose was to contain
United States and the Soviet Union and their Soviet geopolitical expansion during the Cold

Based on Harry S. Truman's speech at a congress on March 12, 1947

“The United Nations is designed to make possible lasting freedom

and independence for all its members. We shall not realize our
objectives, however, unless we are willing to help free peoples to
maintain their free institutions and their national integrity against
aggressive movements that seek to impose upon them totalitarian
regimes. This is no more than a frank recognition that totalitarian
regimes imposed on free peoples, by direct or indirect aggression,
undermine the foundations of international peace and hence the
security of the United States.”

T h e economic assistance provided by the United States

through the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan
succeeded in rebuilding and recovering the
economies of Greece, Turkey and Western
Europe which had experienced economic decline
due to World War 2.
Evidence that this assistance was utilized to its
best can be seen in the Greek state which
succeeded in rebuilding public and private public
infrastructure, including schools, factories,
transportation and communication facilities. In
addition, financial assistance was also distributed

Conclusion

The Truman Doctrine is a doctrine derived from President Truman's speech which contained the
United States' willingness to provide assistance to countries that would be influenced by
communist ideology, namely Greece and Turkey in the form of economic assistance.
