TEAM SPORTS-BASKETBALL
Team, Individual/Dual Sports

Individual sports are those played by one person against another

or against a number of solo players. A dual sport (not to be
confused with team sports) is played by partners (two people)
against another set of partners or a number of sets of partners.

A team sport is an activity in which a group of individuals, on the

same team, work together to accomplish an ultimate goal which is
usually to win. Some team sports are practiced between
opposing teams, where the players interact directly and
simultaneously between them to achieve an objective.
HISTORY
 Basketball was invented by
James Naismith in Springfield,
Massachusetts.
 The year was 1891, and as the
story goes, Naismith was asked
to come up with an indoor game
that offered fewer injuries than
classic American gridiron
football.
 He came up with a 9-on-9
game that involved shooting a
ball into a peach basket.
HISTORY
 Under those first rules, a single point was scored for a made basket. The first
game would have a final score of 1-0.
 In 1893, the first international basketball match was organized.
 In 1895, the first recorded basketball game between two college teams was
organized.
 In 1896, the first collegiate 5-on-5 game was played between Iowa and the
University of Chicago, with Chicago winning 15-12.
 By 1898, professional leagues were forming, as were collegiate leagues.
 Six teams took part in the first professional basketball league, but the league was
disbanded in 1904.
 By 1900, most major colleges were fielding a basketball team.
 In 1905, formal collegiate rules were introduced for basketball and in 1909, the
NCAA would take over the game for good.
HISTORY
 In the first decades of basketball, it was growing as a
sport, but had no real international organization.
 It took several petitions by basketball supporters to have
basketball included as an Olympic demonstration sport in
1904.
 That all changed on June 18, 1932 when FIBA was first
formed.
 FIBA, Federation of International Basketball
Association, it is the governing body of basketball.
 The work of FIBA on the international game would help to
make basketball become an Olympic sport in 1936, which
was won by the US National Team.
HISTORY

 The National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded

on June 6, 1946.
 The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA
was founded on April 24, 1996.
 The Philippine Basketball Association was founded on
April 9, 1975.
 The University Athletic Association of the Philippines
(UAAP) was founded on September 27, 1938.
  The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is
the oldest athletic association in the Philippines, it was
established in 1924.
HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED

 During the game, the ball is played with the hand(s) only
and may be passed, thrown, tapped, rolled or dribbled in
any direction, subject to the restrictions of these rules.

 A player shall not run with the ball, deliberately kick or

block it with any part of the leg or strike it with the fist.

 However, to accidentally come into contact with or touch

the ball with any part of the leg is not a violation.
