Definition
The “Achievement Gap” in
education refers to the disparity in
academic performance between
groups of students.
The achievement gap shows up in
Grades
Standardized-test scores
Course selection
Dropout rates
College-completion rates
and among other success measures.
Let’s find out…
 Why do such disparities exist?
 What can be done to reverse the trends?
 How can schools create a successful,
motivational learning environment where all
students are capable of reaching equal
standards?
What are the contributing
factors to the Achievement
Gap
Quality Preschool
Family and Socio Economic Status
Quality of Teachers
Educational System
Cultural Environment
Attendance at school
Socio Economic Status
Who is to Blame?

 Students?
 Families?
 Teachers?
 Educational System?
Students
Child’s attitudes, values, and skills
Eager or motivated in the classroom
Focusing on friends rather than school work
Family and Socio Economic Status
Influence by family background
Differences in the family’s
education values
Home support for school
Cultural and social differences
Single Family Home
Parent working one or more jobs
Low income
Low social status in the society
Broken families and………….
Teachers
Not knowing a student’s interests, abilities
and struggles
“Teaching down” to students labeled as
incompetent or unable
Quality of Teacher: The only factor we can
control is the quality of our teaching. We
have to use our resources, get creative, and
do everything we can to ensure that these
students match up with their current grade
level
Educational System
Child attend a quality preschool are far more
likely to get better grades, stay in school, and
have better jobs those who do not attend a
quality preschool

 Current school culture does not address the

unique needs of lower income, inner city
minorities
Cultural Environment
We have to remember that not all the students
have the same upbringing.
We need to acknowledge that and be accepting of
different life style and religions.
If a child feels unaccepted in the school setting
then learning is going to take a back seat to his/her
feelings.
Attendance at school
•The students who attend school regularly learn
more successful in school than students who do
not.
•Parents who make regular school attendance a
priority also are helping their children learn to
accept responsibility.
•Children who develop good attendance habits in
the early grades will be more likely to continue
them throughout their school career.
Services Teachers can Provide
Offer free tutoring since most of the students
may be of financially weak
Build relationship with these students, show
an interest in their hobbies and their interests.
Visit the families and get to know the
background of each student
High expectations for success- set goals for
the students don’t just make sure they are
attainable, but make the students work for it.
Aim High.
Services Teachers can Provide
Adopt team teaching which ensures
improvement of instruction and school
atmosphere as a whole.
Frequent Monitoring of the progress of the
students- Assess the students frequently and
adapt the lessons accordingly.
Safe and orderly environment- Students need
to feel safe in the class room and the School.
Learning needs to be a top priority, not taking
a backseat to worry or fear.
Services Teachers can Provide
Home- School relations: Parents are
supportive of the school and teachers, school
communities via any means possible. Constant
communication the key to keep up the
relationship.
Instructional Leadership- the Principal is the
role model for teachers, parents and students.
The Principal follows the school mission and
leads by example.
Clear School Mission- Set your school
mission and follow it, make sure that the staff
understand it and is willing to follow it.
Conclusion
I believe we need a national amendment
which will guarantee every child in India
the promise of not just an equal education
but a high quality equal education.
WE CAN DO IT…
We can make a difference for these struggling
students. If we do our part and help the students
to do their part, these kids would reach at the
success. Let’s keep up our hard work, our
determination, and love and passion for
teaching…
