RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY AND ITS

APPLICATIONS
OBJECTIVES
 To understand concept of “Raman spectroscopy”.

 To understand its applications in various fields.

 To understand basic instrumentation of Raman spectrometer.

 To know challenges that are faced in Raman spectroscopy.

INTRODUCTION

 Raman spectroscopy was discovered by Dr. C.V.Raman in 1928.

 Raman spectroscopy is a spectroscopic technique used to observe vibrational,

rotational and other low frequency modes in the system.
INTRODUCTION
 Monochromatic laser light with the frequency –V0 excites molecule and
transform them into oscillating dipole. Such oscillating dipole emits light of three
frequencies namely :

1. Rayleigh Scattering
2. Stokes Raman Scattering
3. Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering.
BASIC INSTRUMENTATION OF RAMAN
SPECTROMETER
TYPES OF RAMAN SPECTROMETER

 Dispersive Raman spectrometer

 Fourier Transform Raman spectrometer.

INSTRUMENTATION OF DISPERSIVE RAMAN
SPECTROMETER

1. Light source
2. Collecting optics
3. Straylight rejection filter
4. Wavelength selector
5. Detector.
INSTRUMENTATION OF RAMAN
SPECTROMETER
PROBLEM FACED IN RAMAN
SPECTROMETER

1. Mixing of Rayleigh scattering and Raman scattering.

2. Strong LASER source is required.

3. Fluorescence effect.
APPLICATIONS OF RAMAN
SPECTROMETRY IN VARIOUS FIELDS
1. Pharmaceutical science
2. Geology and mineralogy
3. Carbon materials
4. Semiconductors
5. Life science
6. Material science
7. Polymers
8. Environmental science
9. Forensic science.
CONCLUSION
 Raman spectroscopy is very helpful analytical tool having certain advantages like
non-destructive testing, minimal sample preparation.

 Raman spectroscopy is useful in material science , pharmaceutical science and ever

expanding range of applications and industries.
