EFFECTIVE PEOPLE
BY
STEPHEN R- COVEY

A Brain storming session

Stephen-R-Covey
I believe the best way to improve the
organisation is to improve yourself;
the best way to empower the
organisation is to empower yourself.
This Inside-Out™ approach starts
with you. You can benefit the most
from this focus by being willing to
risk, share, try, and learn.
Foundation
 Sowa Thought, reap an action;
Sow a action , reap a habit;
Sow a habit, reap a Character;
Sow a Character ,reap a destiny.
(Samuel Smiles)
Character;
the roots of effectiveness.
 Our first energies should go to
our own character
development , which is often
invisible to others , like the
roots that sustain great trees.
As we cultivate the roots , we
will begin to see the fruits.
Character is based on Principles
 Principles are deep, fundamental
truths, classic truths, Generic common
Denominators.
 Principles are Bigger then People or

Circumstances.
 By centring our lives on timeless,

unchanging Principles, we create a

fundamental paradigm of effective
living.

Paradigm; the way we see , understand, &
interpret the world ; our mental map.

 If you want small changes , work on

your behaviour ; if you want Quantum-
leap changes , work on your paradigm.

Principles are self-evident natural

Laws
We get superb Results when we align our
Paradigm with Principles of effectiveness

 What is Effectiveness ?
 Its a P/PC Balance
 PC=Production capability: Maintaining ,

preserving and enhancing the resources that

produce the desired results (the Ghoose)
 P= Production: the desired results. (the
Golden Egg)

Maturity Continuum
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Carry your own weather
 Paradigm: I am a product of my Choice
 Principle: I am free to choose and am

responsible for my choices.

 When we can no longer change a situation ,

we are challenged to change our selves.

(Viktor Frankl)
Continued....Habit 1: Be Proactive
The habit of personal vision
 . Each person has the power to make his or her own
decisions. When individuals use this power to
choose their responses according to self-
determined values, they are proactive. In other
words, proactive people use a margin of freedom to
make choices that best apply their values. As they
work on things they can control (their Circle of
Influence™) in lieu of reacting to or worrying about
conditions over which they have little or no control
(their Circle of Concern™), they use positive energy
to influence the conditions and increase their Circle
of Influence.
Circle of Influence Vs Circle of
Concern
 Circle of Influence: Your circle of
influence includes those things
you can affect directly.
 Circle of Concern: Your circle of

concern includes all those things

you care about.

Pause & Respond
 Reactive Behaviours: allow outside influences
(moods , feelings, and circumstances)
 Proactive behaviours: they pause to allow

themselves the freedom to choose their

response based on principles and desired
results ; their freedom to choose expands as
they wisely use the space between stimulus
and response.

your mission, values, and high-priority goals.
 Urgent. An activity is urgent if you or others

feel that it requires immediate attention.

 Paradigm: I Listen with the intent to

understand.
 Principle: To communicate effectively ,we

must first understand each other

One Friend ,one person who is truly
understanding , who takes the trouble to
listen to us as we consider our problem , can
change our whole outlook on the world.
CONT....HABIT 5: Seek First To
Understand, Then To Be Understood
1. Diagnose Before you prescribe: take the
necessary time to diagnose the symptoms
then prescribe
2. Autobiographical Responses: meaning from
our own frame of reference , we advise , probe
,interpret ,and evaluate; other's messages based
on our own experiences.

The enemy of the best is the good
.

 Paradigm: together we can create a better way,

a higher way.
 Principle: the whole is greater then the sum of

its parts.
The essence of synergy is to value differences -
to respect them, to build on strengths, and to
compensate for weaknesses. The way to
achieve synergy is through the creative
process, which is terrifying, because you never
know where the creative process will lead you.

effectiveness , we must renew

ourselves in;
1. Soul
2. Mind
3. Heart
4. Body
Renew regularly in the 4 dimensions
1. Spiritual Dimension: (the soul)
Assume you have a year to live, what legacy
would
you want to leave?

2 . Mental Dimension: (the Mind)

Assume your knowledge and skills will be
obsolete in a year , what new learning
avenues would you explore.
Renew regularly in the 4 dimensions
3 . Social/Emotional Dimension: (the Heart)
Assume that every thing you say about
People will be Heard By them . How might
you choose your words differently.

4 . Physical dimension: (The Body)

Assume you have had a Heart attack in the
