Ankylosing spondyli

Definition
• Chronic inflammatory progressive disease of the ax
ial skeleton with sacroilitis (b/l) as hallmark.
• Ankylosing means stiffening, spondylo- refers to the
vertebra, and -itis refers to inflammation.
• Also called Bechterew disease, is part of a group of
diseases called seronegative spondyloarthropathies
. (RF -ve)
Etiology
• Common in 20-30 yr males
• Autoimmune disease
• HLA B 27

Investigations
• MRI - early changes, joint space narrowing, erosion.
• CT/ X Ray - Bamboo spine.
• ESR, CRP - raised
• HLA B 27 testing
• RF -ve, ANA -ve ( rule out RA, SLE)
• ASAS criteria can be used for dx
