Today’s Goals:

• Identify the causes of the War of 1812.


• Describe the roles of James Madison,
William Henry Harrison, Tecumseh/The
Prophet and the War Hawks.
• Be able to define: CEASE, SEIZE,
ISOLATIONIST, RESISTANCE and
CONFEDERATION.
A President’s Problem:
• Who took office in 1809? James Madison
• “If you agree to cease your attacks on American ships, the US will
STOP trading with your enemy.” What TWO countries were given this offer? France and
Britain
• Who agreed FIRST (even though they continued to seize American
ships headed to British ports)? France
• Trade was cut off to the country of ….. Britain
• Britain continued to seize our ships and Impress our sailors.

• Who said, “Let’s go to war against Britain because I think they are
stirring up trouble with Natives on the frontier”?
What is happening with the Natives?
• Who are the TWO native American men who tried to stop the PUSH by
the white settlers and attempted to UNITE all Indians in a
confederation? Tecumseh and “The Prophet”
• On November 7, 1811 – Who led a US force against a group of Shawnee
Warriors in attempt to stop the resistance? William Harrison
• WHERE was this battle/What was the battle called? Battle of
Tippecanoe
• Who won? They won
• What was discovered about the weapons that the Native used? British
weapons
Who were the WAR HAWKS?
• A WAR HAWK is someone who yells for war!
• Two examples include: John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay of Kentucky
• They said, “If we go to war against Britain, we can gain… Canada
