Objectives application of error analysis
and how apply it to our
current unit of study.
My students have a good grasp on
place value concepts?

I have a good grasp on place value

concepts & am comfortable
teaching it?
“...detected that teachers are not able to make any
logical pedagogical explanations on mathematical
operations with fractions, and that they have superficial
knowledge on fraction-related concepts... their levels of
reasoning for explaining the meanings of such
operations are low.”

I make
mistakes on
purpose when
teaching.
Error Analysis is the process of
reviewing a student’s work,
looking for patterns of
misunderstanding, and correcting
those patterns. Errors in
mathematics can be factual,
procedural, or conceptual, and
may occur for a number of reasons
Let’s analyze some
errors!
Pen & paper, fresh word document, whiteboard, or whatever
you like to write on.
Are they correct?
How do you know?

Where was the

error?
Why do you think
that error was
made?
What can we tell
them to help them
learn from this
mistake?

●Use student work from past quizzes,
anonymously or students volunteer as tribute.
●Choose a fictional person to “help.”
●Make it fun!
●Go slow and allow students to lead as much as
Practical Use possible.
●Great for students who are not the fastest in
giving an answer.
●Takes some of the pressure off to quickly solve.
●Reinforces the idea that mistakes help us learn.
They are a positive not a negative thing.
How can you use it in
your current math unit
to reteach place value?
Raise hand to hope on the mic, or answer in the chat pod!
●PDF, JPEG, Share Pod with drawing tools.
●Images were made in publisher, but can
easily be done in word, powerpoint, pen &
paper.
Technical Use ●Make it your own.
●No one right way to do this.
●Integrate into what you are already doing.
●Choose a focus/ note little notes as the kids
solve to “correct” at the end
