Soil
• It is the portion of the Earth’s crust that can
support plant growth.
• Three generic types:
– Laterite – form in countries with a hot and wet
tropical climate such as Philippines.
– Pedocal – has accumulated calcium carbonate
through time. Forms in drier regions (western part of
USA)
– Pedalfer – this term is a combination of pedon (Greek
word for “soil”) aluminum, and ferrum (Latin word
for “iron”). Rich in iron oxide and aluminum.
