THE WRITING PROCESS

Prewriting

1
Strategies and techniques for generating ideas for writing

2
Talk it out
Discussing ideas with a teacher, friend or fellow student often
helps you find new avenues to approach the ideas you have
and helps you uncover ideas you might not have considered.
3
A personal journal is a record of your observations, feelings,
and reflections on your experience. It is a good way to record
your observations and thoughts and thus develop ideas for
writing.
4
A guided journal is a collection of prompts, exercises, and
activities that help for you to dive deeper into your feelings,
your goals, and your ideas. ... Most people who have completed
a guided journal have spoken to the fact that, due to those
prompts, they were so easy to use.

Brainstorming
Write down as many ideas as you can and make point form
notes on them as you go. When you feel you’ve written down
the obvious things that relate to an idea, move on to a new
one, or explore a related idea in more depth.
7
Freewriting
Give yourself a broad topic to write about. Then, on a pad of
paper or a word processor, write continuously for two or three
minutes. Write down anything that comes to mind that somehow
relates to the topic you began with.
When you’ve finished, read through what you’ve written and
identify any useful ideas that have come out of the exercise.
Asking questions
It allows you to see your topic from different points of view and
may help you clarify your position on the topic.
9
Clustering
Clustering is a way of making a visual map of your ideas. It helps
you make new associations.
