Emergency and First Aid

Outcome
• Explore emergency situations and how to deal
with them with basic First Aid skills..
Indicators:
• c. Discusses RICE (rest, ice, compression and
elevation) treatment and when and how it
must be administered in born, joint and
muscle injuries.
• d. Identifies “near drowning” and knows how
to drain out water, and provide CPR to victims.
• Success Criteria:I will be successful if I can
“expalin what is RICE and its properties , what
is near drowning, and how to deal with it .".
• Sprains
• Sprains occur due to overstretching or tearing
of ligaments.
• There are three degree of sprains: mild,
moderate and severe.
Treating sprains
• Management of sprains involves the execution
of RICE principle which stands for Rest
• Ice Compression Elevation.

Protect’ has been added so we now have


• the acronym PRICE.
• P stands for Protection:
• R stands for Rest:
• I stands for Ice:
• C stands for Compression bandage:
• E stands for Elevation:
Fracture

• A fracture is the medical term for a broken


bone.
Near Drowning
• The situation when a person nearly dies from
not being able to breathe or suff ocation
under water is called ‘near drowning’.
• Causes
• • Suicide attempt
• • Seizure or heart attack while in the water
• • Inability to swim or panicking while
swimming
• • Leaving small children unattended around
bathtubs and pools
• Symptoms
• • Swollen belly
• • Bluish skin of the face, especially around the lips
• • Chest pain
• • Cold skin and pale appearance
• • Confusion
• • Lethargy
• • Restlessness
• • Cough
• • Shallow or gasping respirations
• • Unconsciousness
• • Vomiting
• First Aid
• When someone is drowning:
• • Do NOT place yourself in danger.
• Do not get into the water unless you are absolutely
sure it is safe.
• • Extend a long pole or rope attached to a buoyant
object, such as a life jacket. Toss it to
• the person, then pull him or her to the shore.
• • Once on land, give CPR as needed.
