In English, we have 4 different kinds of Conditional
sentences :

If Type 0 (zero) - Present Real situations


(Facts, scientific facts)
If Type 1 - Present or Future Real situations
If Type 2 - Present or Future Unreal situations
If Type 3 - Past Unreal situations

UNLESS = IF ….. NOT

Unless means except if or simply it means if...not.


Both of these examples have the same meaning and refer to the
present time.

You can't go on vacation unless you save some money. =


If you don't save some money, you can't go on vacation.

If you don’t study, you will not pass your exam. =


Unless you study, you won’t pass your exam.

UNLESS = IF ….. NOT

Exercises :

AS SOON AS

We use as soon as to show that something happens immediately,

I’ll call you as soon as I arrive. / I’ll call you as soon as I arrive
[= ‘I will arrive and then I’ll call you immediately.’]

As soon as I have the information, I’ll tell you.


[= ‘I’ll get the information and then I’ll tell you immediately.’]

IN CASE

In case is used when taking precaution against a possible


threat/danger, to avoid an unwanted situation.

Examples :

Take an umbrella in case it rains!


Do something in case something happens.
Set up your alarm clock in case we fall asleep.
Wear your helmet in case you fall.
Bring your bathing suit in case we go swimming.

I WISH / IF ONLY
I wish we had more time = If only we had more time
(If only is more emphatic than I wish)

There are three types of I wish / if only sentences

1. WISH

Use : A wish in the present or in the future with the simple


past. The simple past here is an unreal past.

Form : If only / I wish + simple past

I WISH / IF ONLY

Example : If only I knew how to use a computer.


(I don’t know how to use a computer and I would like to learn how
to use it).

*When you use the verb to be the form is “were”.

e.g. I wish I were a millionaire!

2. REGRET

Use : To express a regret. The action is past.

Form : If only / I wish + past perfect

Example : If only I had woken up early.


(I didn't wake up early and I missed my bus.)

3. COMPLAINING

Use : To complain about a behavior that you disapprove in present


time

Form : If only / I wish + would + verb

e.g. I wish you wouldn't arrive so late all the time.


(I'm angry because you always come late and I want
you to arrive on time)

I wish … (for Present)

When we use wish+ past, we speak about our wish in the present.

Examples : I wish I were a doctor. I wish they went to the concert


I wish we were together.

3. Tim wishes he ____ (write) the letter.

I wish … (for Past)
When we use wish+ past perfect, we say that something had
happened differently from our wish in the past.
Examples : I wish he hadn’t seen that film. (But he saw)
I wish he had come in time. (But he didn’t)

1. I wish I ____ (go) to Paris.


2. We wish we ____ (visit) the exhibition.
3. I wish I ____ (hear) this concert.
