Comprehensive Concept of Islam

What is Islam ?

 “Islam” literally means Submission.


 As a term used in religious context:

Submission to Allah alone.


Who is the Muslim ?

A Muslim is one who submits to the


Divine injunctions and does not
deviate from them.
Classification of Islam

 Beliefs
 Prayers
 Affairs
 Ethics
Two types of Divine Injunctions

Inherent injunctions Optional injunctions


 Inherent injunctions are those  Voluntary injunctions are those
which are unavoidable. which are not bound to obey
because of any inherent compulsion.
 It is impossible for anyone to defy
them.  We have a choice to obey or
disobey these injunctions.
Example : Man is ordered to speak
with his tongue, hear with his ears, Example : Man is enjoined to worship
and smell with his nose. one God but he is not bound to do so
because this injunction is not
irresistible in its nature.
Instead, he has been given direction.
Islam and Man

 The life of man on this earth and the coming of


the Divine injunctions/Islam began
simultaneously.
 This world has never been without a religion and
a Divine law(Shariah).
 All such people who accepted the faith of any
prophet were Muslims in an ordinary sense.
The Religion of every nation was Islam

 As all the codes of Divine injunctions were


sent by Allah, submission to each of them
was submission to Allah.
 Therefore, each of these religions was
nothing but Islam.
Al-Islam is the specific name of the
ultimate religion only
 In the special terminology of the Quran, Islam is the name of that
religion which was revealed to the last of the Prophets Muhammad
s.a.w.
 Similarly the name of title “Muslim” is also reserved for the followers
of this last religion.
 When The Quran uses the word Al-Islam, it does not do it in its
ordinary sense but refers specifically.

“ Indeed, Religion with Allah is Islam.” (3: 19)


“He has named you Muslims.” (22: 78)
