2 Formulas of Complex Ions

● Metal center written first.

● Parentheses used for molecule
ligands (H2O, NH3, CO, CN).
● No parenthesis for single-atom
ligands (F-, Cl-, Br-, etc.)
● Entire complex ion is enclosed in
BRACKETS, with charge outside.
● Charge of complex ion = metal’s
[Co(NH3)4Cl2]+1 oxidation state + charge on all
ligands
3

Coordination Compounds
Coordination compound: a compound containing a
complex ion, usually solids

Counterions: the ions outside the complex ion, which

keep the compound neutral
4

Coordination Compounds in H2O

In coordination compounds, the ions separate upon
dissolution in water, but the complex ion remains
intact.

Unidentate ligands
Polydentate Ligands
• Some ligands have two or more donor atoms.
• These are called polydentate ligands or
chelating agents.
• In ethylenediamine, NH2CH2CH2NH2,
represented here as en, each N is a donor atom.
• Therefore, en is bidentate.
