of The Eyes
Various types of preparations are used for the treatment of ophthalmic (eye)
disorders such as glaucoma to lower IOP, bacteria or viral infections of the
eye, inflammatory conditions, and symptoms of allergy related to the eye.
Lowering IOP
The -adrenergic blocking drugs decrease the rate of production of aqueous humor and thereby lower the IOP.
Carbonic anhydrase is an enzyme found in many tissues of the body, including the
eye.
These drugs are used in the treatment of elevated IOP seen in open-angle glaucoma.
Prostaglandin Agonists
• Lower IOP in POAG and OHT
• These drugs act to lower IOP by increasing the
outflow of aqueous humor through the trabecular
meshwork.
Mast Cell Stabilizers
• The mast cell stabilizers currently for ophthalmic use
are nedocromil and pemirolast.
• These drugs are used for the prevention of eye itching
caused by allergic conjunctivitis.
• The mast cell stabilizers act by inhibiting the antigen-
induced release of inflammatory mediators

Corticosteroids
These products lubricate the eyes and are used for conditions
