What are refractories?
• Refractories (fire bricks) are ceramic materials that
are highly resistant to heat, corrosion, pressure and
retains strength even at 1,000 °F (538 °C).
• Refractories are inorganic, nonmetallic compounds
maily composed of silicon, aluminium ,magnesium
calcium, and zirconium.
• More heat-resistant than metals and can be made into
different size and shapes.
Characteristic of a good refractory
• Should not be fusible at high temperature
• Should not undergo chemical rxn. with gases, molten metals and
slag
• Should not be corroded by flames
• Should not crack or change its size
or shape
• Abrasion resistance
• Good impact resistance, long service
life
• Able to withstand the overlying load of
structures at operating temperatures

Based on Refractoriness
Refractories are classified as
• Super duty: PCE value of 33–38
• High duty: PCE value of 30–33
• Intermediate duty: PCE value of 28–30
• Low duty: PCE value of 19–28
