Alternating Current Generator

1. Statement:
• “A alternating current generator is a device that converts
mechanical energy into alternating current”.
2. Principle of A.C Generator:
• The emf is induced in the coil rotating in a magnetic field due
to change of magnetic flux.
3. Main
1.   parts of A.C Generator:
• Pole pieces (U – shaped magnet)
• Armature (coil on iron cylinder)
• Slip rings (as connector)
• Carbon brushes (external supply)
4. Working of A.C Generator:
• emf is induced by the side of loop intersecting the magnetic
field.

• Total emf induced by the loop is;

• If loop is replace by coil of N turns

1. •   Linear speed is converting to angular speed
v=
A = 2rL
t =t
The above equation shows that induced emf varies sinusoidally;
5. Maximum
1.   induced emf:
• When coil is perpendicular to the magnetic field
sin 90o = 1

i. Important formulas:
t
I = IotI = Io
