Set-up for step ladders

1. Pre-use check (feet included)


2. Ensure there is space to fully open
3. Use any locking devices
4. Ground should be firm and level
5. Floors should be clean, not slippery

Step ladders in-use

1. Short duration work (max 30 minutes)


2. Light work (up to 10 kg)
3. Do not work off the top two steps (top three steps for
swing-back/double-sided step ladders) unless you have
a safe handhold on the steps
4. Avoid side-on working
5. Do not overreach – make sure your belt buckle (navel)
stays within the stiles and keep both feet on the same
rung or step throughout the task

Set-up for leaning ladders

1. Do pre-use check (include ladder feet)


2. Secure it
3. Ground should be firm and level
4. Maximum safe ground side slope 16 degrees (level the
rungs with a suitable device)
5. Maximum safe ground back slope 6 degrees
6. Have a strong upper resting point (not plastic guttering)
7. Floors should be clean, not slippery

 Leaning ladders in-use

Leaning Ladder in use

1. Short duration work (max 30 minutes)


2. Light work (up to 10 kg)
3. Ladder angle 75 degrees – 1 in 4 rule (1 unit out for
every 4 units up)
4. Always grip the ladder when climbing
5. Do not overreach - make sure your belt buckle (navel)
stays within the stiles.
6. Keep both feet on the same rung or step throughout the
task.
7. Do not work off the top three rungs – this provides a
handhold
