Animal Care
Feeding: standard rodent pellets and distilled water
ad libitum.
Room: The rats/mice should be kept at a room
temperature set at 25±2oC with 70% humidity.
Ventilation rate will be maintained between 10-20
aircycles. Temporary needs for ventilation of
sheltered or outdoor facilities should be met with
auxiliary equipment. Since they are diurnal, they will
be provided 12 hours of light and 12 hours of
darkness lights will not be too bright since too much
light will hurt their eyes. Fluorescent lights (30
watts) can be used to provide illumination.
II. Animal Care
Cage cleaning: 2-3 times/week with sodium
hypochlorite. Autoclaved rice hull bedding
should be provided and will be changed as
often as necessary to keep the animals clean,
dry and relatively odor free.
Acclimatization: 3-7 days
Animal sacrifice: cervical dislocation,
carbon dioxide chamber.

holes in both ends as
mouse restrainer

Pipetteman and tips
A vial for blood

Placing a mouse on a cage lid and grasping the loose skin
behind the ears by the thumb and forefinger
Push the mouse into the restrainer
Leave the tail of the mouse outside the cover of the restrainer
Amputate the tip of the mouse tail by scissors
Massage the tail and collect blood by pipetteman
