The Portable Pump is a critically

important piece of equipment -
why?

Because you never know when

you will need it next!

It must therefore always be:

Readily accessible

In a fully operational

condition

Clean
Portable Pump 7

Storage:

A purpose-built storage rack for both

pump and hoses is preferred

Relieve the pressure in the hydraulic

hoses, grease and protect the couplings

Always clean the pump and fittings

thoroughly before returning to storage

Keep the pump accessible at all times

Portable Pump 9

Operational condition:

Follow the testing and

maintenance routine in the
Planned Maintenance System

Always test-run the pump slowly

on deck before lowering into the
cargo tank, inspect for oil leaks

Cleaning:

Clean the outside of the pump with

water, steam, chemicals, rags as
appropriate

Clean the interior of the pump by

flushing with clean fresh water or
recirculating chemical solution as
appropriate

Clean hoses and fittings as required

Handling:

Lower only by hoist or crane, never by

the hoses!

“Chase” the product down, never

submerge the pump and hoses!

Preferably, transfer to another tank

first, rather than direct to shore, in
order to minimize the back pressure
Portable Pump 14

Always try to locate the

pump as near to the sump
as possible, to minimize
residues

Remember that most likely

the pump will have to remain
in the cargo tank for (at least
initial) cleaning

Record Keeping:

Maintain a “Last Cargo”

record for the Portable Pump

Keep full test and

maintenance records
