Meaning
• Drug addiction is A chronic disease affecting the brain, and just about
everyone is different.
• Drugs affect different people in different ways. One person can take and
abuse drugs, yet never become addicted, while another merely has one
experience and is immediately hooked

WHAT CAUSES DRUG ADDICTION?
• There are several factors and causes to consider with addiction. First there is
a genetic component, that is, what is passed on to you through your family.
• If your blood relatives had a predisposition to become addicted, chances
are you have that same tendency.
• Personality contributes to drug addiction.
• Peer pressure is huge, both for teenagers and adults alike.

Effects to Society
• Increase of heinous or anti crimes.
• Increase of immorality and loss of moral fibber of the society.
• Downfall of social values of the country.
• Limited movement of people, specially at night.
Effects to Law Enforcement
• Corruption if some law enforcement personnel.
• Ineffective application and implementation of narcotic law.
• Produces bad image and credibility to the police agency.
• Loss of trust, confidence and integrity among some police personnel.
• Coddling of the drug dependent by the police personnel.
Effects to Economy
• Sabotage to the economy.
• Draining of huge amount of money from our country.
• Aggravating the problem of poverty in a country.
• Economic growth is slow.
• Massive corruption of public and private officials.
• The northern Indian state of Punjab biggest issue confronting voters is
not jobs or corruption, but a drugs epidemic that is sweeping the state.
A recent government study suggests that more than 860,000 young
men in the state, between the ages of 15-35, take some form of
drugs.Heroin is the most preferred, used by 53% of all addicts. But
opium and synthetic drugs such as crystal methamphetamine are also
common.

• The Indian survey was based on interviews with 5,00,000 people across
the nation. The studies have contributed to more accurate figures of
drug use globally. The report estimated that of the 271 million people
that used any drug, 35 million (nearly 13 per cent) suffer from a drug
use disorder.
