COMPARISON

TEACHER ELIANGE
 There are two ways of making comparison in English.

Comparative

Superlative
1. COMPARATIVE
 We use the comparative two compare TWO things.
 For short adjectives add –ER + THAN.

Examples:

 Pay attention:
If the short adjective ends in consonant + vowel + consonant double the
consonant and the add –ER + THAN.
Hot – hotter than

Spring is hotter than fall.

If the adjective ends in –Y take it off and add –IER + THAN

Happy – happier

 For long adjectives use MORE + adjective + THAN.

Examples:
Charming – more charming than
Beautiful – more beautiful than

 Be careful!
Some adjectives have irregular forms. Take a look:

For short adjectives we add THE + adjective –EST

Examples:
Young - youngest Strong – strongest

That woman is the strongest in the gym.
 Pay attention:

consonant and the add THE + –EST.
Hot – the hottest

If the short adjective ends in –Y take it off and add THE + –IEST
