There are two ways of making comparison in English.
Comparative
Superlative
1. COMPARATIVE
We use the comparative two compare TWO things.
For short adjectives add –ER + THAN.
Examples:
Strong – stronger than Young – younger than
Examples:
Charming – more charming than
Beautiful – more beautiful than
Examples:
Jonathan is better than his brother in math.
That movie is worse than the other one.
I live farther than you from downtown.
2. Superlative
Examples:
Young - youngest Strong – strongest
If the short adjective ends in –Y take it off and add THE + –IEST
Happy – the happiest
Examples:
Charming – the most charming
Curious – the most curious
Examples:
Jonathan is the best student in our class.
That movie is the worst I’ve ever seen.
This is the furthest city I’ve ever been to.
