PROBLEMS
A. Macro
1. Over the last two years, there has been a slowing of the yearly increase in sales.
2. With these marketing concerns, the divisions and groups within Exley are not adequately working
together to complete organizational goals.

B. Micro
3. There is a large amount of inter-departmental conflict taking place all across the organizational structure.
4. The company is having difficulties in producing a team concept within the departments.
5. Lack of Communication
CAUSES

1. Conflict of Interest- Departments are more focused on departmental goals rather than
overall organizational goals.

2. Implementation of separate division to handle product development has disrupted the

previous cohesive interaction between prior existing divisions. New product development
division has taken on a life of its own, opting to market its new developments instead of
passing the new products to the other divisions to handle their usual responsibilities.
ALTERNATIVES
1. I would recommend that PD not be a separate entity all to its own, but that it would be composed of
individual representatives from all of the major departments. This would allow PD to be a
communications hub rather than a source of miscommunication. Also, all parties would be involved in the
decision making and information sharing present at PD.
2. An intergroup conflict intervention and select an OD professional from outside to training and helping
organization managers.
3. Another recommendation is Exley chemical company should find an external consultant or OD
practitioner to find and solve company’s problems.  The current product development division seems
like a role of OD but they are not experienced and professional to solve the conflicts among the
departments in an organization.
